Dentists Administering Dermal Fillers

In numerous countries, it is very common that dermal fillers are used every day, in many cosmetic procedures. Only those who are certified to administer the treatments are allowed to so, as there are guidelines that must be followed. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons were the only professionals who have traditionally been allowed to administer these treatments until recent changes. Dentists have also been licensed to deliver dermal fillers in certain states in America, in order to treat certain kinds of conditions.
In this article we shall take a look at the role of dentists in administering dermal fillers to patients.
Some brief information on dermal fillers.
Hyaluronic acid is the main component in dermal fillers, these are contained in the skin already as a natural ingredient. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid within the skin reduces significantly causing lines and wrinkles. Wrinkles and lines are reduced by using dermal fillers, this will make skin appear younger and brighter. They are also helpful in plumping up the lips as well.
Dentists administering dermal fillers
Some discussions and arguments have been going on as of late, as opinions vary on whether dentists should be certified to inject dermal fillers. Some say that dentists do not have the required training regarding facial anatomy, as they deal with the oral cavity mostly during their procedures. During dentistry training, the facial muscles are studied in great detail, so dentists will argue that they are more than qualified in the anatomy of the face.
Prescription and administration of dermal fillers by dentists has now been approved by the California dental board. The recent changes are being praised by dentists, because according to them, they can deliver these treatments with the necessary training they have. The board does have some limitations about which conditions a dentist can administer this treatment for, and therapeutic reasons is the exception where permission is granted. The dentist must also take the necessary training in order to administer the treatments.
The guidelines vary between states. Dentists are only allowed to use dermal filler injections for dental reasons after a training program that lasts 21 hours, in the state of Georgia, according to the Georgia Dental Association.
Limitations
At this time, it looks like a lot of dental boards in states in America are now allowing dentists to administer dermal filler injections when it is in relation to a therapeutic dental procedure. The injection of dermal fillers for cosmetic reasons or for non-dental related problems is considered unprofessional conduct and may even be illegal. In every state, a dentist must look at the rules that are in place regarding the injection of dermal fillers, and if they are certifiable, to seek out reputable training on the procedures.
Conclusion
Dentistry has advanced significantly over the years and so has cosmetic surgery. The injection of dermal fillers is permitted nowadays for issues that are involved directly in dentistry, but for cosmetic reasons, dentists are extremely limited in what they are allowed to do. Dental boards may in fact allow dentists in time to treat patients using dermal filler injections for cosmetic reasons, but dentists must refer to the stipulations set up by the boards in their state of origin at this time for guidance on this.
