Care for your Skin and Look Better for It

by Brenner Muncher

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. Skin takes a lot of abuse from scratches or other injury, or from coming into contact with chemicals or other toxins, so skin renews itself continuously. These are the reasons that we must take good care of our skin, this constant damage that it takes. These days, the skin care industry is well into billions of dollars; a lot of these funds are funneled back into research in order to make people look like they did in their youths. Even though the ageing process is inevitable for everyone, we still don't want to accept it, and try to remain attractive and to be confident in our looks.

One particular type of skin care product that is most commonly used all over the world is moisturizing cream. There are a lot of commercials and banners for these products that say they "keep moisture in" better than other brands. But what exactly are moisturizers and how do they help? This will be analyzed briefly in this article.

A moisturizer is what, exactly?

The skin is made of a number of layers, of which the stratum corneum is the outer layer that is exposed to heat and cold and at risk of getting dry and hard. A moisturizer cream does a good job of allowing more water to be retained in the stratum comeum. Many moisturizing creams help to replace lipids and sterols which are natural components within our skin.

What are in moisturizing creams?

The aim of creating a good moisturizing cream is to ensure they contain the essential ingredients that are a part of normal skin. Alpha and beta hydroxyl acids form an important part of these products, and are useful in enhancing the turgor of the skin at the level of the stratum corneum, improving its flexibility. Retinoids is also another compound that is added sometimes, and this has an effect of restoring the natural balance in skin that has been exposed to the ageing effects of exposure to sunlight.

Fat soluble vitamins A and E are also ingredients in many moisturizing creams. Skin benefits from vitamin E's unique properties that include antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, these will aid the cells in skin to be repaired better, and to reduce the effects that varying factors negatively have on our skin.

There is another area of properties of these moisturizers, 'vehicles' are what they are called. The moisturizer has a better consistency because of these preservatives and emulsifiers that aid the skin's absorption process for these nutrients and other ingredients.

There are different types of moisturizers for varying skin conditions, and the ingredients will be vary depending on this, things like cinnamic aldehyde or benzyl benzoate could be added, for example.

What moisturizers are used for

Moisturizers are used for almost all skin conditions, and even in people who have 'normal skin'. Most of the time though, these are used for people who have types of skin disorders that include -

▪ Eczema

▪ Psoriasis

▪ Contact Dermatitis

▪ Icthyosis

▪ Rosacea

Dermatologists recommend moisturizers for these, and other kinds of skin conditions as well.

Side effects

It is very uncommon, but people have had adverse skin reactions attributed to the usage of moisturizers, which have certain ingredients they are particularly sensitive to.

Conclusion

In order to have healthy looking skin, we need to care for it, so the use of a quality moisturizer is a great way to begin the process. Skin conditions can be treated with moisturizers, and it will look healthy and be brighter when these creams are applied frequently.
