How to choose a drug treatment program

by Fransic Rankin

Drug addiction and substance abuse negatively impacts millions of people in the United States. Addicts and their friends and family members face a number of very sad and frustrating situations. Anyone who loves someone with a substance abuse problem wishes that their loved one would seek help. The number of options available for treatment can quickly become overwhelming and it can be difficult to know what type of treatment, if any, will work.

There is no one correct way to help someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol. Many people attempt an intervention when the troubles of an individual in their life escalate to a dangerous level. This has proven many times to work. However, before your intervention you need to research treatment options and have something set up so that you can offer immediate solutions to the addict.

Top 3 ways to evaluate a drug abuse treatment plan

You should begin your search for treatment programs by asking any places you are considering what science based research they used in developing their treatment program. The presence of medical professionals at a treatment center can indicate a well-rounded approach to treatment. You should also however, make sure they do not rely too heavily on medications and that they take a well-rounded approach that also includes behavioral therapy.

Watch out for programs that claim to have the perfect way to treat drug addiction or substance abuse. A one size fits all type of treatment can never work for all patients. A good rehabilitation clinic will create an individualized program for every patient. They should also be willing to adapt the program over time to address the needs of an addict as they begin to make progress.

The quality of treatment can sometimes be evaluated by the length of stay offered at an inpatient facility. While certainly not the only evaluation that should be made, any program that lasts fewer than three months will likely not include all the necessary steps to help uncover the causes of the addict's problems. Drug addiction can take years to sort out and during that time an addict needs constant support and supervision to help them avoid a relapse. Many people do very well in the confinement of a treatment center but if they are released to soon and left to fend for themselves they will likely return to their old behaviors.
