What Can Cause Hives?

by Scott Mogul

There are many reasons for hives. If you can determine what's causing your condition, you may then try to avoid the culprit so that the hives clear up and to stop hives from recurring in the future. Hives typically go away in just a couple of days when you eliminate the reason behind the problem, although in some cases it may take longer to get complete relief.

Sadly, it could be a challenge to determine the cause of your hives because they can be caused by such a large amount of things. In a number of cases, it is impossible to pinpoint the precise cause. If you break out in hives, think about whether you have eaten anything new or unusual recently, whether you've taken any new medications, and whether you've tried a new kind of soap or washing detergent.

Some common reasons for hives include:

- Allergic responses to certain foods,eg eggs, milk or other dairy goods, chocolate, nuts including peanuts, fish and shellfish, tomatoes, some spices, and berries including blueberries
- Allergic reactions to some food additives, including artificial colorings and preservatives
- Allergic responses to certain medicines, including some antibiotics, aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, pain medicines like morphine and codeine, and some medications used to treat high blood pressure
- Allergic reactions to, or skin irritation caused by, soaps, shampoos, deodorants, or laundry detergents
- Insect bites or stings
- Allergic responses to pet dander
- Allergic responses to latex, such as latex gloves or prophylactics
- Inappropriate heat and/or excessive exposure to sunlight
- Exorbitant exercise
- Blood transfusions (often due to an allergenic response)
- Thyroid abnormalities
- Stress

Less frequent reasons for hives include immunological reaction diseases like lupus, some sorts of cancer, rare genetic afflictions, and bacterial and viral diseases.

In some cases, the cause of hives can't be determined.

If you can't figure out what can cause your hives

If you can't figure out what is causing your hives, go ahead and attempt to treat them with oral antihistamines and/or hydrocortisone cream, available over the counter. You can try applying cold milk compresses or taking baking soda or colloidal oatmeal baths. If those measures don't help, or if your hives come back, see your health practitioner. You may need to go visit an allergist to help establish the cause of the issue. Prescription medications may also supply relief if over the counter products don't do the job.
