Countertop Water Filter Systems, Do They Work?

by Esme Spence

A countertop water filter can provide great comfort to those who live in areas with poor water quality or for those who are always concerned about contaminants in their drinking water. However, many people worry that their water filter might not even work. In the past, some filters were discovered to actually add more contaminants than they successfully took away, but modern systems from companies like Pristine water purification have shown marked improvement. So, basically the answer to whether your countertop water filter works is, it depends on your filter!

First, we will talk about some of the reasons water filters may be a good idea, even if your area usually has fine tap water. Nest, we will discuss current assessments of countertop water filter systems. Finally, we will look into how countertop filtration systems can work.

In America, the water quality in almost all parts of the nation is reliable. Usually, the incidence of waterborne illnesses in the U.S. is low, but as recently as the 1990s some metropolitan areas have seen outbreaks of waterborne illnesses. Cities such as Las Vegas, New York, Washington, and Milwaukee have had problems. Natural disasters (like hurricane Sandy) can cause flooding or other problems that can ruin water supplies and make drinking water unsafe. Bacteria, protozoa, and viruses may cause these illnesses. They are often the culprits for a range of symptoms from fevers and diarrhea. Use of water filtration systems like Pristine Water Purification can do quite a bit to prevent waterborne illness.

This is conditional, however, on whether you have an effective countertop water filter or other type of system. Most tap water in the United States is just fine, but for people who have sensitive immune systems, seniors, pregnant women, or children there is likely an added need to check water quality. Today, there are established industry standards for filtration that can act as a bellwether. The Natural Resources Defense Council says that a quality system today should be labeled with NSF/ANSI standard 53. Depending on the brand, age, and proper maintenance and use, filtration systems may or may not work well. Do some research before choosing a filter to avoid ending up with a shoddy filter that could do more bad than good.

There are differing kinds of filtration systems that a countertop water filter may have. Carbon filters are often utilized for smaller amounts of water. They are able to remove bad tastes or odors, as well as contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and parasites. Reverse osmosis systems separate impurities from the water to provide very healthy drinking water. The majority of contaminants such as parasites and heavy metals may be removed with reverse osmosis systems. UV filtration systems are ideal to remove bacteria or parasites by exposing the water to ultraviolet radiation. For other contaminants types, however, UV filtration systems might need help from different kinds of filtration systems.

Clean water is important, and having a countertop water filter such as the one made by Pristine water purification or others can do the trick, but you need to do your research and ensure you have the right system in place.
