Tips On Getting Rid Of Tonsil Stones

by William P. Dunham

Tonsil stones are an accumulation of foodstuffs and mucus which have collected on the crevices within the tonsils and have hardened and compacted overtime. These calcified lumps of food eventually decompose giving rise to throat infections and very bad breath. As well as being a source of discomfort they can impact negatively one's social life due to the associated bad breath. In a lot of cases, getting rid of tonsil stones can prove to be a challenge. They are a leading cause of tonsillitis--inflammation of the tonsils--which results in pain and discomfort, especially when swallowing.

Prevention is better than cure. To begin with you must work hard to make sure the problem does not arise in the first place. Eating the right kind of foods and proper oral hygiene is a prerequisite.

It is always a good idea to consult a medical expert due to the fragile nature of tonsils. If you see these solid globs on your throat you can attempt moving the tonsils from underneath in an upward movement using a cotton swab or your finger to loosen them. In order not to introduce germs to your throat make sure the either the swab or the finger properly cleaned.

An ingenious method that can be applied is swallowing saliva after tensing p your throat and touching your mouth palate with your tongue. This results in muscles of the throat moving up forcing the objects off. If all else fails buying a machine called a Jet-Stream is another option. The strong-force of the stream of water aimed at the blobs can dislodge them from the crypts.

Non-alcohol and non-sugar based mouthwash is good for gargling to eradicate them painlessly. Hydrogen peroxide can be used to irrigate the area, as the bubbling effect helps to bring the object to the surface making it easier to remove manually. Using salty water is another option as salt has the effect of eliminating bad odor and corrodes on the calcium deposits.

Regular cleaning of the mouth helps to avoid the build-up of solid food particles and germs. When this is done in an effective manner the problem can be avoided altogether. This also has the effect of avoiding a foul smelling mouth.

Sneezing, coughing and flexing of the throat can also help getting rid of tonsil stones. Although some doctors will recommend the use antibiotics their effect can be short-lived as the problem tends to be a recurring one. If all else fails surgical removal of tonsils can be a last option.
