by James Rutherford
Are plants and roots more beneficial for allergy relief than a prescribed drug?
Anyone who has had to suffer with an allergy, or an allergic reaction, would be the only ones who could answer that question honestly, based on what type of medication they have or currently still use. Basically, what works for one person will not necessary work for ten others. Allergy relief can be found just as effectively with herbs and plant extracts, than with over the counter remedies such as Benadryl, Dermidex and Clarityn. Therefore it is wonderful medically wise, that not only are there different remedies which can be obtained from a chemist, but that nature is also able to supply natural, viable alternatives.
When a Chemist or General Practitioner subscribes a remedy for whatever ailment you have, that medicine has but one purpose. It has been solely designed to inhibit or cure that particular allergy from which you suffer. It does not deviate. There are no other qualities within, to aid in any other medical area beneficial to the human body.
It is wrong to think that various roots and fruit extracts, are similar to conventional medicines in that they only target a specific area of the anatomy. People from all around the world have been using naturally sourced produce for more than what they are commonly known for. One plant is capable of healing other vital areas within the anatomy, whilst treating the original complaint. It is this quality that sets them apart from conventional medicines. ,
Having the ability to combat different types of disease and ailments at once, naturally sourced medication refrains from being individual. Using a plant extract for hay fever or an allergy, can be found to aid a multitude of other health related problems. Things such as diarrhea, heart disease, cystitis, cancerous tumors, colic, arthritis and so forth. In other words they do more than what it says on the bottle.
There are various teas that are well known by hundreds of alternative medicine users because they bring relief from hay fever, as well as an abundance of other substances known to reside in their compounds.
The abundantly found stinging nettle leaf is a remedy for swollen joints around Europe, especially in the Germanic regions. This is probably due to the nettles high levels of calcium being good for the bones, and richness in iron. To raise their hormone levels, weight trainers take it as a supplement due its variety of important vitamins. To maintain a clean scalp and keep locks shiny is another of its little known uses.
Mild asthma sufferers use peppermint tea as an alternative to inhalers, because of its ability to fight the common cold. Regular consumption has also been found to aid digestive symptoms like intestinal gas, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea.
Green tea has become a favorite fluid for lots of professional sportsman because it not only increases stamina when tired, but because it looks after the important organs, paying special care to the heart. It is also as good as water to rehydrate.
Found in the skin and stem of pineapples, is a compound called bromelain which acts as a natural remedy for severe hay fever. Because of its ability to clear the nasal passage and reduce swelling, thousands that suffer with acute hay fever benefit most. But what not many people do know is that bromelain is used to slow the growth of cancerous cells plus it makes a huge impact in relieving bone degenerative diseases. As it has been found to slow blood clotting, it is strongly advised that bromelain should not be taken if suffering with a poor heart.
A herb also used for hay fever is Astralagus. Very much like bromelain, this variety of herb has been found to have positive results in patients suffering from cancer. For the protection of diseases which target vital organs like the brain and heart, consumption of astralagus is recommended by some medical institutions. Apart from benefiting inside the body, the elasticity of the skin is targeted thus slowing down the onslaught of old age.
Not all alternative remedies for allergy relief, comes from above the ground. There are a number of roots that allergy sufferers use because the ability they have to clear the nasal passages, are much more pleasant than a saline solution.
The Japanese root Wasabi, has a similar taste as horseradish and mustard and is used on sushi as a marinade. But it is also more widely recognized among hay fever sufferers as a nasal decongestant. Unlike mustard and horseradish, wasabi does not burn the tongue. Instead, the chemical allyl isothiocyanate which is found within, directs the heat to the nasal passage where blocked sinuses are relieved. The other benefit of wasabi when consumed, is that it acts as an anti bacterial mouthwash.
If suffering with mouth ulcers, another common root found to have an array of benefits is licorice root. In Japan and China they use a compound from within the licorice root to treat lung diseases such as hepatitis and tuberculosis.
Another root which is used effectively against hay fever is the Butterbur root. But it's other attribute which was first discovered by the Red Indian, was how Butterbur could efficiently treat a severe headache or migraine.
Apart from their anti-bacterial, antiviral or anti-inflammatory benefits, the above list all have one other extremely important attribute. They are all jam packed with flavanoids. Most plant species contain different levels of flavanoids, but green tea contains more than any other plant, liquid or food that is deemed to be healthy. Found predominantly in the skin of onions and apples, Quercetin is the most known of all flavanoids. Not only is it renowned for being a powerful antihistamine but its use in dietary control is now evident. Regular consumption of Quercetin has been found to inhibit the production of fat cells and improve endurance. Also when a natural plant substance called resveratrol is added to Quercetin, there is evidence to prove its ability at treating high cholesterol levels.
Maintaining a healthy diet that consists of plenty of fruit, vegetables and herbs has been found to noticeably increase health and reduce the likelihood of contracting serious diseases and allergies. Because most plants contain flavanoids, it can be argued that this explains the fact why vegetarians always look young for their age.
Before undergoing any dietary change or plan to consume any of the powerful naturally grown plants and herbs mentioned, always check with your doctor first to eliminate any underlying problems.
