Getting The Necessary Treatment For Emetophobia

by Hannah Smith

Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting. If you are a sufferer you will know that it probably started when you were a child. Unfortunately, it often goes untreated as it is layered under other related issues ad it can continue undetected as a lifelong phobia.

You might have vomited in a public space when you were young. You could also have experienced continuous vomiting for a few days. This is therefore, the fear that grips you when you think about it. It can take complete control of your life and can lead to compulsive actions.

Some of the controls could be like sleeping with a towel nearby in order to have a place in which to vomit, or insisting on always driving in case of car sickness. There are however, many variations of this problem and this hyper-vigilant sensitivity usually creates its own problem and makes the situation even worse.

The fact that there is a constant thinking about the problem, the thought that he or she is nauseous and other added problems, can cause the nausea to actually surface. The constant fear also drives him or her to isolation and can create social anxiety or agoraphobia.

These problems are not the only ones that could be seen as part of emetophobia. The anxiety related to food is an added extension as there would be the radical concern for food that is not cooked or the way in which the food is stored. In their minds this might lead to food poisoning.

It leads to the overreaction to how food is prepared and the analysis of food. Thus, it will lead to a strict diet that would exclude a lot of food types. As this fear becomes more severe, it could end in anorexia which is an extremely unhealthy situation.

Whether the end result of dealing with this illness is anorexia or agoraphobia or any other related problem it all starts with the fear of vomiting. There are some sufferers that are extremely afraid that someone will vomit in front of him or her and as a consequence lead to their own vomiting.

The diagnosis of this illness is not easy, as it is often hidden behind other phobias, which develops as a result. By stripping away all the layers, a good therapist can find the real reason for the other phobias and at the end be able to treat the fear of vomiting.

The idea behind the therapy is to confront the issue and have the mind turned away from the thoughts of vomiting. This is possible through hypnosis and relaxation. There is medication available as well, but the major issue with the treatment is so that you will know that emetophobia can be controlled.
