The Proper Shade On The Hair Color Chart

by Helena Smith

A hair color chart or wheel is a valuable aid for choosing which colors look best on you. Perhaps your friend or neighbor has a new hair color, and it looks fantastic. If you go out and buy the same product, it may not look so fantastic on you. This sometimes happens for several different reasons, and here are some to consider.

Understanding the Basics

In order to get a better understanding of coloring products and their use, it is best to understand the science of colors. For example, red can be many different shades, and when something is red, it basically absorbs all colors, except red or shades of red. However, it may also reflect other colors, and this is what creates some of the more interesting and lovely shades of red.

If you are a blond, you might wish to become a red head. Some blonds will take on a strawberry blond appearance with some shades of red, added. However, some women are blonds with yellow highlights, and yellow and red makes orange. It is also important to test dye part of your tresses first, as lighting has an effect on coloring. Sunlight is somewhat different from indoor lighting.

You might be a red head, wanting to change colors. When this happens it is almost like taking paint to a red canvas or wall. Some of the colors will blend with the red for a new look, while others will completely cover up red. This is why some hairstyles appear to have colored highlights, and others appear all one shade.

Working with Skin Tones

If your friend looks good as a blond, and you do not, it may be a skin tone issue. Your skin may be darker than your friend's skin, and blond may not look natural with darker skin. When there is a large contrast between skin color and hair, it is easy to notice.. However, more subtle shades may not be so apparent. By holding your skin close to a coloring chart, you can more readily see the difference.

Eyes can have a larger effect on hair shades, than you might think. For example, blue and gray colored eyes may look best with lighter hairstyles. On the other hand, brunettes might look best with darker colored eyes.

Professional Advice

You might be uncertain about the best coloring product, and this is where professional advice can be handy. A professional hairstylist has the knowledge and training to properly advise you on these matters. In fact, it may be best to let a professional take care of the job, as it can be well worth the investment.

Summary

Perfect hair color does not always come by accident. A friend may look great as a brunette, but it might not be a good look for you. If you study a hair color chart, it may help you understand how some shades blend, while others cover up. This can help you decide what to do. If uncertain, consult a professional.
