Unique Content Article: A Fun Way to Exercise

A Fun Way to Exercise

by Ursula Hobbs

Zumba is a great way to get fit without the arduous work of running or other exercise. For those who are totally uninitiated, Zumba is essentially an adaptation of Latin dance. The goal of Zumba is to provide a workout, while making the process as painless as possible.

Exercise is something that everyone knows is necessary, but often avoid because it is not enjoyable. Generally, there is a direct correlation between how difficult a given exercise is and how much good it does for the body. This is why dedicated athletes are generally in good health.

Increasing the intensity of the exercise is not necessarily the best choice however. Even though it might seem counterintuitive, it's actually possible to burn more calories with a less intense activity. This is because the best activity in the world does no good if you never do it. Running once a month burns far fewer calories than biking every day, even though each bike ride burns few calories per minute than running.

Zumba was actually invented somewhat by accident, by Beto Perez, an aerobics instructor. One day when he had forgotten his intended music for class, he simply used the Latin dance music tapes he had in his car. The concept of using Latin dance music instead of traditional aerobics tapes turned out to be much more fun, and the idea spread across South America and into the United States.

There are several types of Zumba dance. One is Zumba fitness. Most similar to the original classes by Mr. Perez, Zumba fitness is intense and fun. Zumba gold is targeted towards slightly older enthusiasts, and has a slightly difference pace, and a slightly different emphasis. Zumba toning works more of the upper body by incorporating sticks, similar to maracas that work the arms, abs and back. Traditional Zumba tends to focus on the lower body, which is fine because of the large muscles there. However, working the upper body is a focus many people have, and Zumba toning provides this.

Aqua Zumba puts a new spin on the Zumba theme, and also takes the intensity up tenfold. Performed in a shallow pool, Aqua Zumba takes advantage of water's greatly increased resistance compared to air. Aqua Zumba is a great way to get a tough workout, without the dangers of high impact training.
