The Etobicoke Volleyball League May Put The Town On The Map

by Ericka Marsh

Nothing puts a town, city, or country on the map for many people quite like a sports team. This can become even more true during the period just prior and during an Olympic year, wherein athletes from many places come together. With the addition of this particular beach-centered pass-time as an event, it is possible more people will learn about the success of Etobicoke volleyball teams as they train the athletes who shall pursue the Gold.

A city within a city in Ontario Canada, this region practices their beach sport on the banks of Lake Ontario. Up until now they have received no real notoriety, and have not made much of a name so far. However, should their Leagues find themselves handed over as Olympic hopefuls from a suburb of Toronto, then the already modernized and state-of-the-art facilities they boast may get an even shinier new look.

For visitors to the region, some of the most acclaimed shopping in Toronto is located on these streets. Visitors are encouraged to embark on their journey around October and November so they can get all their Holiday shopping done. They maintain a clean city with a friendly, small-town atmosphere that visitors love; making it a comfortable place to inhabit while taking in the sites.

There are coaches who teach everyone from small three-to-five year-old kids on up to teens and young adults training for Olympic dreams. Elite programs exist for these athletes, preparing them to be on a winning team. Professional players from their national teams are in on it as well, helping to train and prepare many young Olympic hopefuls.

Having a sporting event place a community on a stage benefits everyone equally. Young people watching the Olympic games take place often learn about countries and cities they never heard of. School papers are written about these athletes, complete with a historical narrative and geographical outline.

This sport, while originally played as a day-at-the-beach activity, has become an event which young women are paying more and more attention to. Historically only sporting events dominated by men have taken center stage in the world arena. Girls often avoid sports as a result, figuring that college scholarships and Olympic opportunities are not something that apply to them.

The Olympics has always been a great gender and race equalizer in the world. There have been nearly as many young women and minorities to become famous due to their Olympic achievements, with their moments of glory being played for viewers decades after the event. This is more important for young people than ever.

Sports in our modern age is becoming about more than team spirit, leadership, and physical fitness. It is a tool of empowerment for women and other minorities, it places towns on the map for people all around the world, and it is steeped in traditions which are sometimes thousands of years old. Good sportsmanship has become a character trait rather than a manner of accepting defeat, and this trait is something the world could use more of in the future.
