Dementia Rating Scale

by Jack Morgan

The condition of dementia goes through different stages in its development. In order to diagnose the illness and quantify the symptoms of this condition, different rating and diagnosis instruments are used. One of the most common instruments is the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR). The instrument functions as a numeric device used to quantify the intensity of various dementia symptoms.

When it comes to Dementia rating scales also called Reisberg scale, it entails some stages.

With the dementia rating scale the scores obtained in various aspects are summed up to arrive at a composite score that can range from 0 up to 3. According to the structure of the model, if the patient gets a composite rating of 0 it means that there are no dementia symptoms. A 0.5 score implies that the system is mild. 1,2,3 scores represent mild, moderate and severe dementia symptoms respectively.

The CDR scale has been commended for its effectiveness in detecting mild impairments. The downside of using the scale is however that it takes time to administer the identified reliance and subjective assessment. The other demerit of the instrument is its relative failure to detect changes over time.

Despite the tool's noted subjectivity in the structure of its usage, outcomes of recent research endeavours have showed that the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale has significantly high interrater reliability. The Clinical Dementia Rating scale is upheld as a reliable as well as a valid instrument for investigating and staging dementia.

The Clinical Dementia Rating scale is playing a critical role in pharmacology especially in the production of drugs for halting and arresting the development of dementia related condition such as Alzheimer's disease. CDR scale is important for accurately diagnosing the condition and staging it accurately so as to define appropriate clinical care.

CDR scale is not the only tool in the inquiry domain of dementia. PAINAD scale is another instrument used for assessing the severity of dementia symptoms. This tool is used on patients who have the form of dementia that has escalated to advanced stages so much that the patients can no longer communicate verbally.

Stage six is also referred as mid-stage and Decline which is at middle Dementia stage. Extensive assistance is required for daily activities. Names of the close family are forgotten and there is little memory of events which are recent. Speaking ability declines and they can only remember some of the things before getting this problem. Average duration for this stage is 2.5 years.

The PAINAD scale enables the medical practitioner to use its rubric to quantify the severity of pain indicative aspects. The instrument can be used by a medical practitioner to ascertain if certain behaviors are pain related or not. Accurate diagnosis of dementia is critical at any stage of the disease. Administering appropriate care and treatment for patients suffering from Alzheimer begins with an efficient use of the ground breaking dementia rating and diagnosis innovations.
