Improving Your Fitness With Swimming Heart Rate Monitors

by Helene Norris

Swimming heart rate monitors can assist you with observing your exercises while in the pool. You can check the reading after you've finished. Wearing a monitor means you will be able to see how hard you are working and how you respond to variations in speed. In addition, you will be able to see how quickly your heart rate slows down after exercising.

When choosing the right monitor there are many things to consider. Firstly, it must measure accurately, that's the most important part. However, some people want it to perform other tasks such as counting calories burned. Make sure it fits you properly because if it doesn't then it can distract you while exercising. You may want one that looks good too.

It is common for swimmers' monitors to have a chest strap which transmits data to a wrist watch where it is logged. Watches that don't have straps are not as accurate as those that do have them because they move about while you are swimming. Obviously the watch you choose will need to be waterproof. You may also want to think about how water resistant the watch is because this will determine how deep you can swim with it.

It's very hard to read your watch while swimming. Some have an alarm function which is set off when you leave your optimum rate, however you may not be able to hear it when you are in the water. It's likely that you will only be capable of reading your watch during more relaxed exercises such as the breast-stroke. You will not be capable of even doing that if you have to push buttons to take a reading.

A new innovation emerged recently in the form of goggles which contain a monitor. It can actually send signals to the swimmer while doing lengths. It flashes a green light if the swimmers heart rate is in ideal range, it flashes yellow if it's below the required rate and red if it's above.

The goggles are seen as an improvement because swimmers usually have to measure themselves with a belt or a watch. The problem is, these methods often slow swimmers down whereas the goggles do not. The other problem with wearing a watch is that you have to stop exercising so that you can check it. This new product stops all that and ensures that you get the most out of your swim.

Goggles can even let swimmers measure their work rate while under the water. They can record alterations in light on your skin which leads to signals being transmitted from an earpiece. Some have complained about the bulkiness of the new innovation but many believe it could become a crucial fitness tool.

There are many misconceptions about swimming heart rate monitors. Many people think they are expensive but they can purchased for as little as $40. Almost all types of monitor are waterproof although damage can be done to them if you press their buttons while still in the water. People also think they are too complicated to use but most can be set up by pressing one button and have a limited range of functions.
