Boxing & Mixed Martial Arts

by Rod Bourgoine

While MMA offers fighters an opportunity to utilize a variety of fighting skills, there is no doubt that boxing is a big part of the sport. A strong punch requires less energy with more potential impact than other MMA skills. Many of the sport's top fighters have strong boxing skills and a few have professional boxing records. Here are a few MMA fighters with major boxing skills.

Georges St.-Pierre is arguably one of the best mixed martial arts fighters of all time. While he has no professional boxing experience, St.-Pierre was trained in the sport by boxing great Freddie Roach, one of the sports best-known trainers. Many of St.-Pierre's wins were due to his strong striking skills, including several knock-outs, most notably in UFC 48 where he knocked out Jay Hieron during the first round. Of course, St.-Pierre's 22-2 MMA record is not only due to his boxing skills, as he also has black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gaidojutsu and Kyokushin kaikan.

When you think about the best MMA fighter of all time, Anderson Silva's name is always up for consideration. However, he also fought two bouts as a professional boxer back in Brazil, winning one of the fights by knockout. Silva obviously sees the importance of having a wide arsenal of skills. In addition to boxing training, he is one of the top Muay Thai fighters in the world, holding a black belt. Of course, he also has a black belt in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Taekwondo, as well as a yellow rope in the Brazilian art of Capoeira.

Vitor Belfort is yet another amazing Brazilian MMA fighter with a strong 21-9 pro record in mixed martial arts. He also participated in one professional boxing match against Josemario Neves in 2006. Belfort knocked down Neves three times in just a minute to win the fight by TKO. While he hasn't participated in another boxing contest since, he continues to train with a boxing coach, as well as working on other skills. He holds several black belts, including Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

K.J. Noons, who trains out of The Arena MMA in San Diego, maybe be one of the most versatile athletes in the world. Not only does Noons have a strong mixed martial arts fight record (11-5), he also has a 12-2 pro kickboxing record and has won 11 of his 13 pro boxing bouts. More impressively, he was fighting in all three pro sports concurrently. He is a black belt in Kenpo Karate and also won a gold medal at the Long Beach International Karate Championships in 1997.

The moral of the story is that boxing can be a huge component of your overall arsenal, so be sure to find a gym with excellent boxing instructors as well as a gym that offers classes in many other fighting styles. Not only will boxing improve your ability to throw a punch, it also will help you learn how to avoid being hit and how to better absorb a hit.
