Bed Bugs: What Makes Them Harmful As Pests

by Teresa Port

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that live in dark, warm, and hard-to-reach areas in your house. They are also found in those areas that you don't usually pay attention to such as wall cracks and edges of cushions and couches. Although they are not able to transmit serious diseases, they can cause itchy rashes on your skin. This is because of their means of surviving: sucking the blood of animals and even your blood while you are fast asleep.

Flat and oval in shape, an adult bed bug can grow to around 4-5mm long and 3mm wide. Commonly reddish brown in colour, their body becomes swollen and they turn into dark red after sucking blood.

They seem to have their ingenious way to feed on your blood without you noticing it. They may have bitten already your neck, shoulder, arms, legs, ankles or your feet and sucking your blood and you won't notice it until you eventually feel the itch. When left untreated, however, these bed bug bites may result in allergic symptoms and psychological effects.

The Proper Way Of Dealing With Bed Bugs

Bed bugs can pose a threat to the health of home and building occupants. Thus, it is essential to detect any possible infestation at home or in your place early enough to avoid unwanted health problems.

You can try using essential oils such as lemon and sandalwood as these are known to be effective defences against bed bugs. Other than these, there are mild chemicals you can find at home that are also efficient. These include isopropyl alcohol and pure ethanol, which can kill the newly hatched bed bug eggs and the adult ones as well.

It is also advisable to hire the services of pest control professionals as they hold the necessary knowledge and tools for bed bug control. Pest management companies know best how to manage insects and pests like bed bugs, mosquitoes and the like. They thoroughly inspect your home and evaluate the situation. They utilise the necessary approach also based on the infestation level.
