Basics Concerning Ann Arbor Geriatrics

by Nancy Thomas

Another name for geriatrics is Geriatric Medicine. This field falls under the medicine specialty and is concerned with the promotion of health and prevention and treatment of medical disorder of the old age. Geriatricians and geriatric physicians are the medical professionals who specialize in this field. The Ann Arbor Geriatrics medicine is a fully and highly developed profession. As a branch of specialization in medicine, it has many practitioners who are highly qualified and specialized in it. One can expect to receive professional care at very low rates than in most other places in the country.

Gerontology and geriatrics are two different fields in medicine. Gerontology is the medical study of the process of aging in human beings while geriatric medicine concerns itself with the treatment and prevention of medical conditions that result because of old age. No specifications exist on who qualifies to receive geriatric care. Even individuals at the age of forty can receive the care just fine. The Greek terms from which the term Geriatric medicine was derived means old man when translated into English.

Old and young people are physiologically different in their bodies, making the study of Geriatrics very crucial. As aging progresses, decline in body organs manifests. Previous lifestyles play a role in the kind of symptoms and diseases one experiences. Different people experience different symptoms depending on the healthy organ reserves remaining in the body.

Geriatricians are trained to differentiate between the effects of normal aging and disease. For instance, whereas it is normal for renal impairment to occur in old people, urinary incontinence and renal failure are not normal. Therefore, these professionals promote healthy aging.

Complications caused by decline in organ physiological reserve vary from mild to severe. Suffering from multiple medical conditions is common too. Because of these, elderly people need specific attention to medications, often being subjected to multiple medications. Over-the counter and herbal medications are often mixed by some people. This exposes them to the risk of drug-drug interaction or adverse drug reaction.

Most diseases suffered by old people present themselves vaguely and in non-specific ways. At times they comprise of delirium and falls. For example, when old people suffer from pneumonia they may experience confusion and low-level fever. Younger people often experience high-grade fever and cough. Cognitive impairment and confusion may occur, making it hard for the individuals to describe symptoms.

Some major impairments suffered by old people are placed into four groups and named geriatric giants. The four impairments include instability, immobility, incontinence, and impaired intellect/memory. Most people suffer from loss of hearing and vision. Loss of hearing results in social isolation, dependence, and depression. On the other hand, impairment of vision causes incorrect taking of medication, mismanagement of finances, and frequent falls.

Issues related with quality of life, functional abilities, and independence continue to be of great concern in this profession. Maintaining independence is generally what most old individuals want. This calls for ability to handle daily activities. It is upon geriatricians to offer information and referrals about elder care options to patients as appropriate. Some of the options are assisted living facilities, home care, skilled nursing facilities, and hospice.
