Advice On Applying Home Treatments Such As Olive Oil For Vaginal Thrush

by Susan Lowe

Vaginal thrush is an extremely common yeast infection caused by the overgrowth of a yeast type of fungus that can be found naturally in the vagina. It can cause a range of symptoms including a white discharge, itching and irritation and swelling of the immediate area. Whilst over the counter treatments are available these are sometimes expensive and can sometimes cause side effects. Many people find that home remedies such as using olive oil for vaginal thrush can be an extremely effective and quick way of clearing and treating this infection.

Most infections are due to an increase in the growth of a type of fungus called Candida Albicans. It is believed that around half of women naturally have Candida around the vagina without it leading to irritation. It is advised that women should visit a doctor when suffering from their first yeast infection. This will allow an accurate diagnosis to be made.

It is believed that yeast infections in the vagina are caused by a change to the natural conditions in the vagina. This change leads to a dramatic growth of candida that causes the symptoms of this infection. The change is sometimes due to chemical changes sometimes caused by taking antibiotics or it can be down to hormonal changes caused for example by pregnancy.

There are many alternative home therapies that can successfully treat a yeast infection. Olive oils contain important anti fungal properties which are thought to fight the infection by cutting off oxygen supplies to the yeast. Women often combine these oils with tea tree essential oil which is known for its anti fungal and antibacterial properties.

Combining these two home remedies helps to dilute the tea tree oils which tend to be quite strong. Many women choose to apply olive oils around the area to help soothe the irritation of this yeast infection. Tampons can also be soaked in these oils before adding a few drops of tea tree to the tampon and inserting in the vagina. Alternatively a mixture of these two ingredients can be applied to the area twice a day.

Another often recommended treatment is putting a piece of garlic into the vagina and keeping it there for three or four hours. Garlic has been used for centuries to help clear up yeast infections and can be extremely effective. Cloves can be immersed in extra virgin oils before being used as garlic is quite a strong ingredient.

There a many simple treatments that women can use to successfully clear the infection. These are naturally ingredients and unlikely to give side effects. The items used in these home treatments, such as olive oil for vaginal thrush are easily available thus avoiding an expensive trip to the pharmacist for an over the counter treatment.
