Understanding Rehab Following Lumbar Fusion

by Neil P. Hines

The implementation of spine surgery is considered a delicate process and aims to provide patients relief from discomfort and improved flexibility with the right care. Suitable types of intervention are advised for both injuries and chronic conditions of the spine with the aim of enhancing the ability to function normally. Rehab following lumbar fusion surgery is structured according to patient needs and to prevent complications from occurring.

Rehabilitation begins with measures that are out in place to significantly limit everyday movement. The metal tools used to address spinal conditions will assist in maintaining balance, but requires suitable support to prevent against the possibility of causing disruptions to the bones and soft tissues. The wounds will take an extended period of time to heal.

The restricted movement will apply for 6 weeks to 3 months post surgery to ensure that the fusion is able to take place without complications. You will not be able to perform tasks that involving bending down to grab objects off the floor, but will be provided a grabber to retrieve these items. Dressing will need to be implemented in a structured manner with minimal spinal movement.

In the first 6 weeks rest is important, but patients will also have to engage in structured exercises. These techniques aim to decrease pressure placed on the spinal column and may involve light swimming and methods that do not involve flips, kicks or turns. One is not permitted to engage in gym activities or use exercise equipment.

In the first 3 months one should not bath as the constant bends will increase spinal pressure. Patients are advised on showers to prevent against the possibility of bending and twisting the column that can result in severe injuries and complications. A non-slip mat or chair is advised for use to eliminate possible slips and falls.

All bones and joints can be strengthened when the diet includes the right amount of protein and minerals for the fusion to take place. Modifications to the diets involves the consumption of supplements that allow for the facilitation of recovery methods. Hydration is needed and the consumption of a balanced diet required to maintain stability and healthy operation.

Individuals are required to visit with a physical therapist for a few weeks after surgery has been performed. Light stretches and implementing aerobics down the line aims to enhance flexibility and circulation for healing to take place. A surgeon will aid in determining the healthiest and balanced operation while relieving restrictions in physical operation.
