Psychoanalytic Training For Dummies And Beginners

by Judy Sullivan

Psychoanalysis is known as the system of psychological therapy methods that can be used to aid in mental disorders. One of things that this type of system would do is to bring the thoughts that can be found in the subconscious mind into the conscious mind. So for those who are curious about how this works, here are some things to learn in psychoanalytic training.

In order to start this type of training, it is important that one has to learn about the three main concepts of Sigmund Freud because it is he that created psychoanalysis. Basically, the main concepts are split into three parts that are named the id, the ego, and superego. These three aspects that are taught in this type of training are actually the foundations of the treatment that will be done on a patient with a problem.

Now the first thing to look at will be the id which are the natural instincts that a person has when he is born. Basically, these are the impulse instincts that would include hunger and sex drive which comes natural in a human being. His theory is that people tend to act impulsively based on these certain instincts.

This is followed by the ego which is actually the one driving force that would make the individual perform certain acts. Now the difference with the ego is that it does warn the mind of certain negative consequences that may actually happen after doing the act. It is because of this that ego can appear sometimes in the conscious mind and also sometimes in the subconscious mind.

Followed by that would be the superego which is known to be the one that would that sets the boundaries in the mind. If one is about to perform a certain act that has a negative consequence, then it is actually the superego that would stop the mind from doing anything. In a sense, it can actually be thought of as the human conscience.

One of the core concepts of Freud as well as psychoanalysis would actually be the sex drive of a human being. His famous theory is that one of the biggest causes of psychological problems would be related to the repression of sexuality. Of course he also believed that all children had a sexual desire for their parents of the opposite sex.

Of course dreams also play a very big role in the treatment of psychological disorders. Dreams are mental images of the subconscious mind of a human which could lead to the underlying problem in the first place. Psychologists have to know how to interpret these dreams. It is how they can be able to know the root of the problem.

In psychoanalytic training, one thing that one has to definitely learn would be treatment methods. Now in order to perform any treatment, one has to first make a diagnosis to know what the underlying problem is. In order to find out, one has to conduct conversations with the patient in order to slowly dig into the subconscious mind to find out.
