Allergies Got You Down? Check Out These Beneficial Tips!

by Ok Norlund

Allergies are a common occurrence these days. Our environment contains allergens both indoors and outdoors, and you can be exposed to one or the other or both at the same time. Read the following information to learn the best ways to deal with that awful, itchy feeling in your eyes and nose.

If you have allergies, it is important that you keep the humidity in your home to a minimum. You can do this by setting up a dehumidifier in whichever rooms you are frequently in. One of the worse things for an allergy sufferer is humidity, so stay away from it as much as you can.

If you participate in outdoor activities like camping, jogging or team sports, you may need to wash your workout clothes or uniform more frequently than usual-- after every time you wear it, if possible. Some people who are especially sensitive may even become irritated by grass stains, sweat or dirt on their clothing.

If you are exercising outside during allergy season, and you are having trouble breathing, you should consider lightening your outdoor workout. Try running less, or not as hard so it is easier for you to breathe. Exercise is very important so keep it up!

Protect your hair. If you have mid-length to long hair, you probably already know that spending time outdoors means coming back with pollen in your hair. Mold, spores and other allergens become trapped in your hair and may then come into contact with your pillow at night. If possible, tuck all of your hair into a hat whenever you go outside for longer than 10 or 15 minutes.

If allergy season has made your eyes dry, itchy and irritated, a cold compress may be just the thing you need to find relief. Applying a chilled gel pack, eye pillow or cloth over your eyes can reduce swelling within minutes. This also works wonders for eliminating unsightly redness; it is in addition extremely relaxing!

Understand when pollen counts outside are at their peak, and keep your windows closed during that time. Even though fresh air is needed in your home sometimes, you shouldn't open up windows when there is an extremely high pollen count. Peak times for pollen are between the hours of 10am and 3pm. After this time has passed, open up your windows so that your home can air out.

Children going to school with allergies, may be using medications to handle severe allergic reactions. It helps to get a note from the pediatrician, explaining any allergies. Send a few doses of the the medicine to school in case of a reaction. At the beginning of each school year, provide your child's school with a detailed list of problematic allergens. It also helps to keep a copy of this list in your child's backpack.

Sometimes, new clothing can contain chemicals or other allergy-causing substances that can cause a rash or hives upon contact with your skin. When you buy new clothing, be sure to wash each item before you wear it. This is particularly true of man-made materials such as nylon and rayon.

If you are a season allergy sufferer, then look around your environment to see how you can lessen the allergens around you. This could be as easy as using an inexpensive humidifier to keep the surrounding air moist, which keeps your sinuses from becoming too dry and will not be as effective, in being able to fight off the allergens.

Going for a run around the neighborhood may make you feel wonderful and alive, but pollen and spores in the air can quickly spoil the experience. This is especially true if you are already fatigued or are recently recovering from an illness. In response to these conditions your immune system is compromised, which makes you far more likely to experience a severe allergic response to allergens.

As said in the beginning of the article, it's easier to deal with your allergic symptoms if you know what causes them. Avoiding your triggers as much as possible can reduce the itchy throat and runny nose that commonly come from these triggers. Remember the tips in this article to deal with allergies effectively.
