Wal-Mart Drops Health Insurance Coverage for Part-time Employees

by Daniel Abrams

Wal-Mart, one of the largest firms in our country, prides themselves on providing great benefits to all of their employees. This includes health insurance coverage, and was extended to even part-time employees.

But with the passing of Obamacare, they have lately made a decision to remove this as a benefit to any person working less than 30 hours per week, in an attempt to control costs. This indicates that many of their employees are now exposed to losing their healthcare insurance altogether, and finish up on Medicaid instead. With 1.4 million folks now employed by the corporate giant, this can mean a lot of cash exiting the taxpayers ' pockets to keep the program viable, as many of the part time staff could not afford health insurance coverage thru the exchanges or thru personal health plans.

Staff of Wal-Mart are extremely concerned as scheduling doesn't always permit them a full time schedule. If a surprising event happens, and they slip into a part time schedule, not merely will they lose their health insurance coverage, but their spouses and relatives as well , causing a catastrophic reason for events. It is widely recognized that at least half of employees now working at Wal-Mart are making little more than minimum wage, thereby leaving little room for extra out of pocket costs. They are going to be unlikely to be in a position to purchase health plans, so Medicaid will be the sole choice. This system will be overrun with needy families, bringing strain to a tax-funded system, as well as adding more stress to those doctors who now accept Medicaid as medical insurance coverage. Being they're already few and far between, many confirm that they're going to refuse to take on any new patients leaving these employees and their family members limited access to medical care.

This shows the grave importance of being hard-headed about healthcare insurance for individuals. Obamacare isn't an ideal model to ensure that everyone will be covered. There are still premiums to be paid, and many clarifications to be made. By discarding hundreds of thousands of employees into the new system doesn't guarantee all will find a good resolution. Many may face losing their doctors, or adjusting to a lower level of care in the world of Medicaid. Those that do not qualify for help thru Medicaid must buy their own health insurance coverage for individuals through the health insurance exchange or personal carriers at a premium rate way higher than thru the company plan. This may cause financial strain on these individuals, and ultimately us all.

Wal-Mart doesn't plan to begin this new policy till January of 2013. While many are preparing for the impact of losing health insurance now, there are still ways to ensure they remain covered. Considering a plan with more cost-sharing (i.e. Higher co pays or deductibles) and lower charges could help reduce the burden of leaping costs and permit more folks to stay covered. This will even at last keep health insurance for individuals a benefit for all workers.
