Stop Worrying: Effective Activities To Relax

by Joel Colman

The steps to stop stressing can sometimes be a paradox. Sure, there is "something" causing the worry, but if you are already in an anxious state, there's no way you can take care of the problems that are worrying you. The best thing to do is to ground and center yourself to a place, so the paradox is you actually have to stop worrying first, and then, take care the problems that are causing you to worry. Here are some ideas to get yourself in the groove first that will help you tackle the problems afterwards.

Avoid Unnecessary Negativity

Gasp! What will I do if I don't know about the horrors of the world? The burning, killing, the pillaging and natural disasters. How will I go on without knowing about these things constantly? The answer to that question is: "Quite well." Most things on the news are designed to get a reaction from the viewer. The easiest reactions to induce are panic, terror and stress. It's no accident that all news is bad news. Tune out for a bit, even for a week, just try it. If you feel completely in the dark and missing something in your life after the first week you can always go back to it. But trust me, you'll sleep better without it.

Do Nothing

Some people busy themselves to ignore their problems in an unhealthy way. Or they busy themselves to have a false sense of urgency or importance. Sometimes, it is just best to stop and study the art of being in the moment, even when you are doing nothing at all; especially when you are doing nothing at all. In our busy world, just stopping and being by yourself in quiet and stillness is a rare thing. Sometimes we forget to just "be." If you stop and just be even for an hour, this will center you enough to take care of any problems that are worrying you in the first place.

Do Anything

On the flipside, sometimes stress comes from too much time by yourself. Sometimes it's nice to go out and randomly do something nice for somebody. Or just do something for the sake of anything if you find that you're getting too much idle time. Things I like to do are jogging for about twenty minutes or have some sort of workout. Going out to the coffee shop and reading a book there instead of staying at home. If you feel yourself slowing down and listening to your thoughts too much, definitely going out with people even if they are strangers at a coffee shop or doing something or anything can help.

Find Your Muse

It can be overwhelming to have to deal with one problem after another without a break. Sometimes giving back to this world with a song or a painting or even just whistling a tune can make you feel more a part of it, than being controlled by it. It's great to recharge your batteries by expressing yourself through some sort of creativity. This will help you feel more inspired about life and motivated to handle the problems that are keeping you from the stress-free life that you want and deserve to live.

Converse With Others

In reducing stressful thoughts, talking to someone helps a lot. It's very relaxing just having someone to talk to face-to-face. And no, not on chat, not on text, not on camera, a real person. I hear something like 80% or so of communication is nonverbal. Sometimes it is best if we just unplug and have a tea with someone else to unwind from a stressful day, a stressful thought or stressful problem. The best way to stop worrying sometimes is to hear someone else say "Hey, don't worry about it".

It can sometimes be puzzling how to stop worrying when the first step is to stop the worry. But the best steps towards a stress-free life is to learn the things that work for you to ground and center your mind. Find the things that truly gather your strength and then use that strength to conquer the causes of your worry.
