Fake bake sunless tanning is also known as self tanning, spray tanning, UV-free tanning, or fake tanning if tropically applied. Fake bake sunless tanning is the activity of applying chemical commodities on the body to generate an effect similar to a suntan. The popularity of fake bake sunless tanning products highly rose is the 60s due to its safety in comparison to other tanning techniques. Methods like use of tanning beds or sunbeds have been known to result into skin disorders such as cancer.

They cause a color transformation when ingested in huge amounts. Quality of skin tone caused by them is better when compared to suntan.
Fake bake sunless tanning pills are also important for sunless color change. The pills contain several ingredients including canthaxanthin and beta carotene. People are discouraged from using fake bake sunless tanning pills following the way in which they work and the effects they produce over a long period of use. Canthaxanthin works by being deposited on internal organs such as kidneys, livers, lungs, and the skin.
Once canthaxanthin gets deposited on skin surface from the inside, it leads to color change from the normal one to an orange-brown coloration takes place. This transforms the skin color from the outside and on the inside too. The major limitation is that canthaxanthin in fake bake sunless tanning products causes lung failure in heavy users in the long run. Beta carotene compound is the 2nd causative agent of cancer of the lung after cigarette.
So far, fake bake sunless tanning products named above work from the inside of the body, meaning that they have to be consumed to cause effect. There are other fake bake sunless tanning products that cause effect from the outside. They come in form of lotions, sprays, creams, gels, and body oils.They mainly have dihydroxyacetone as the active ingredient. Dihydroxyacetone is normally shortened to DHA.
DHA is not a paint, stain, or dye, rather it undergoes a chemical reaction with amino acids in the dead cells on the skin. This reaction is same as Maillard reaction, which causes food to turn to brown during processing and storage. There is no necessity for skin pigmentation and/or exposure to UV rays so as to trigger the process. The key disadvantage is however that tans fade gradually starting from 3 nights as dead skin sloughs off the body.
Other products that aid in fake bake sunless tanning employ amino acid known as tyrosine. Tyrosine-based commodities stimulate increased synthesis of melanin in the body. The speed of tanning is accelerated by this increase. They might require ultraviolet exposure for the tan to intensify. Presently, no scientific data exists that supports these claims.
