An Overview Of Hearing Evaluations

by Ann Myers

In audiology, hearing refers to the process of perceiving a sound made by someone or something. Examination and assessment on how the ear receives the sound called evaluation is carried out by specialists called audiologists who are doctors with a specialty in the anatomy of the ear. Before evaluations a screening procedure that is fast and does not involve many items is carried out to know the individual with an impairment and those not affected. Interactions with a doctor are necessary to capture information required for hearing evaluations.

The main purposes of evaluations are determining nature and extent of hearing loss that the patient is suffering from. Listening loss is dependent on type, degree, and configuration of impairment. Also, it is done so as to know the cause and the extent of the listening impairment and the major reason being to know the ideal treatment options that are to be applied so as to relieve and eradicate the problem. The audiologist will use an autoscope along with other different tests to evaluate the patient.

Except for children who audiological testing may be done in the hospital or with the aid of an individual, self-testing with approved aids is recommended for persons who feel their listening action is not in order before visiting a certified specialist. In infants and toddlers, they are observed on how they respond to a minimum loud volume by how their body motions show. Tests used in the evaluation are dependent on age.

The pure-tone method of testing works by examining the extent of sound an individual will hear on varying frequencies. Earphones are worn so as to receive the sound impulses, and it is connected to a computer that displays an audiogram. The interpretation of audiogram is dependent on whether the audiometry is visual or conditioned. Visual involves staring at the sound source while conditioned involves responding to voice by making the commanded action.

Expression of words by speech and also the ability to listen is another evaluation method. The pitch of the voice is noted so as to be interpreted wisely. Areas of less noise and those of extreme noise are ideal for testing the hearing ability and concentration. Those who can hear the message conveyed easily without much struggle show no impairment compared to those that conveyance of message is a real struggle.

Tests on middle ear functioning is also an ideal test. It is carried mainly in preschool children. Measurement of the test includes detection of fluid in the ear, the air and the appearance of an eardrum, tympanometry. Static and reflex measurements also examine the possible location of impairment and the physical air volume. Auditory brain response system assesses information on the inner ear and brain nerves and connections for listening.

Once testing is done, and evaluation has been completed. The disorder is clearly portrayed as the cause is seen. Treatment to eradicate or relieve the condition is done by either medication, use of technological aids or rehabilitation.in some extents implants are used. Prevention is said to be better than cure hence avoidance of exposure to much noise and precautions in areas of loud voices is critical.

Evaluations are more than just perceiving and general screening it is a process that requires a specialist with much training on the subject.
