Oh Anxiety, How Nice To See You! Come On In

by Evan Sanders

Have you ever actually listened to a coach define anxiety in precisely the way that would modify it completely?

I'll never forget sitting in class and having my master coach say to everyone nervously looking at him "Now a large amount of things are going to change in your life, and this may bring up some agitation, but just think of anxiety as new things happening. "

Woah.

New things going down? I have never thought of it like that before. When we actually get down to define anxiety in a very strict sense, it's a sense of worry or nervous tension about a situation that has a little bit of uncertainty surrounding it. What could occur next? What will the result be? In a way, anxiety is a fantastic indicator of forward thinking or "row boat thinking," a phrase I have recently coined.

What is the definition and the thought behind "row boat thinking?"

We are given a fascinating narrative through our lives that sounds a lot like this..."I'll be happy when that occurs. It will certainly all turn out when I really get there. " The difficulty is, we are rowing to this island that does not exist. We think it's there, but it really is one of the most beautifully created mirages we have ever seen. It's really sexy. It's captivating. It's just enough to keep us grasping and thirsting for more. But there's real danger in this kind of thinking meanging that anxiousness can be our best indicator that we are basically caught in the activity of doing it in the first place.

Living in the future can have as many negative complications as living during the past. Everyone knows what it is like to desire to escape our past, but I'm going to hang out on a limb to hazard to say that we should avoid living in the future as much. We can get stuck in some place, an especially doubtful place, that candidly is beyond control. Should you set targets and have a vision for what you want out of your life? Absolutely. But the danger is building the basis of your contentment on such a place.

The one guarantee I am able to make you about this life is that it will change. You can not go to the past, the present is subject to being changed at any moment and the future is to be decided.

So what can we do?

That uncertainty...love it. Embrace the hell out of it. The doubtful places in your life are opportunities to have nothing short than true magic happen. Do you actually know what is going to pop up? Absolutely not. Will you attempt to project as much as is possible? Yes, we've all done that haven't we? But when you start coming gently back to the present moment, over and over again because our minds never stop getting distracted, you get to totally be here. Here truly is a excellent spot to be. Start actually seeing what is occurring around you rather than spending too much time distracting yourself from everything that is not in this moment.

So all anxiety actually is, when it boils down to it, is new things going down. Like that feeling and sit with it. Really take a little time to actually feel the nervousness in your belly and then take a moment to start to understand why it's coming up. "In this moment, what is the thing that's going down now that's honestly new?" When you start to do that, well, things become more fun. But when you stop living in the future , the anxiety disipates and begins to leave altogether.

It's all about how we define anxiety in the first place.
